The Northern and Western Regional Assembly has released its latest “Regional Economic Briefing Note”, with this edition focusing on 2023 data regarding new dwelling completions (CSO) and new commencement notices (Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage).
The purpose of the “Regional Economic Briefing Notes” is to provide stakeholders in the Northern and Western Region of Ireland with a brief update on the latest and key data releases related to the region. The key findings are as follows:
- New dwelling completions in the Northern and Western Region – as a percentage of total new dwelling completions in Ireland – has been gradually dropping in recent years, with this region’s share of new dwelling completions progressively falling from 25 per cent in 2013, 12 per cent in 2018 to 11 per cent in 2023.
- Of the 3,553 new dwelling completions that were delivered in the Northern and Western Region of Ireland in 2023, 27 per cent were located in the area covering Galway County Council. This was followed by Donegal County Council at 18 per cent, Mayo County Council at 15 per cent and Galway City Council at 10 per cent.
- A total of 362 new dwelling completions were delivered in Galway City and Suburbs in 2023, which was the highest level of completions out of the new “Built-Up-Areas” in the region. This was followed by Athlone (193 new dwelling completions), Sligo Town (119), Ballinasloe (82) and Donegal Town (77).
- The data shows that commencement notices for 32,801 new homes were received by Building Control Authorities in Ireland in 2023. Of this total, only 9 per cent were located in the Northern and Western Region of Ireland.
